Mick Thompson

Name: Mick Thompson
Band(s): Slipknot
Guitar(s): Ibanez MTM1, Ovation MT37-5
AMP: Rivera KR-7
Instructional DVD/CD: TBA
Music style(s): Metal

Mickael “Mick” Gordon Thompson, or as his fans have affectionately come to know him as, “7,” is the lead guitarist for Slipknot, a Grammy-winning, American heavy metal band. Mick joined Slipknot in 1996, and the original guitarist, Craig Jones, became Slipknot’s sampler. In addition to his pseudonym, “#7,” which appears in the liner notes of the Slipknot albums he has played on, Thompson sports a “seven” tattoo on his left arm. In addition, his custom Ibanez and Ovation signature guitars have “seven” inlayed on their necks, thus proving how serious Mick takes his role as “#7.”

Slipknot is most famously recognized as a band with an attention-grabbing image, that plays heavy, aggressive music, and consistently delivers energetic, yet chaotic, live performances.  In 1999, following the release of their self-titled debut album, as well as a successful tour as part of the Ozzfest lineup, Slipknot enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame. Iowa, the group’s second effort, catapulted Slipknot even higher. The band then took some time off, and then re-grouped in 2004, releasing the Rick Rubin-produced Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses). This album peaked at number four on Billboard, backed by the strength of four singles. While touring in support of The Subliminal Verses, Slipknot recorded a live album, 9.0 Live, which also had an impressive Billboard debut at number seventeen. 2008 saw the release of the fourth Slipknot album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on Billboard.  Thompson and the band celebrated the tenth anniversary of their debut album in 2009, but tragedy struck the band, as they were on hiatus in 2010, as bassist Paul Gray passed away. Despite this terrible tragedy, Slipknot has been nominated for seven Grammy’s, winning one in 2006. They have confirmed that Slipknot will release a fifth studio album.

Mick Thompson’s guitar technique consists of very fast and extremely accurate alternate picking. He also uses a liberal amount of pinch harmonics, and also likes to employ an occasional lick complete with sweep-picking. The sweep-picking influence comes from Thompson’s admiration for Racer X, and guitarists like Randy Rhoads. As a young, budding guitarist, Thompson found a real challenge when trying to emulate players of this high caliber. Nonetheless, through sheer perseverance, Mick is now able to sprinkle his leads with flashes of real fretboard wizardry.

As previously mentioned, Mick has a series of Ibanez MTM1 and MTM2 Signature Model guitars. He also has an Ovation MT37 Signature Model acoustic guitar. Prior to endorsing Ibanez, Thompson was an endorsee, as well as, a longtime player of B.C. Rich guitars, up until late 2004. In fact, Thompson had even designed a signature model B.C. Rich, based primarily on their “Warlock” model. Along with his guitars, Mick has a line of guitar pickups, known as Seymour Duncan Mick Thompson Signature Blackouts. He has also used EMG pickups, and Mick prefers Black Dunlop Jazz III picks. When it comes to amplification, Thompson uses his signature Rivera KR-7 model, along with its matching speaker cabinet. Mick also uses a wide array of effects, such as an Ibanez Tube Screamer, Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz, Dunlop Carbon Copy Delay, Dunlop Rack Wah, DigiTech Synth Wah, DigiTech Whammy Pedal, Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion, just to name a few!

Synster Gates

Name: Synster Gates
Band(s): Avenged Sevenfold
Guitar(s): Schecter
AMP: Krank, Marshall, Mesa/Boogie
Instructional DVD/CD: TBA
Music style(s): Metal

Synster Gates is the lead guitarist of hardcore metal band Avenged Sevenfold.

Real name Brian Elwin Haner Jr., he was born in July 1981 in Huntington Beach California. He taught himself to play the guitar and his father, Brian Elwin Haner a songwriter and guitarist himself, probably had some input in Synster Gate’s early musical education.

Synster Gates studied at the musicians institute in Hollywood and studied jazz guitar for six months on the Guitar Institute of Technology program – an apprenticeship scheme that was set up to train musicians to a professional level. He was planning to go into session work.

However, he left the course when he was asked to join old Huntington Beach schoolmates as lead guitarist in their band Avenged Sevenfold. Synster Gates joined the band at the end of 1999 aged 18 years old, playing on the first album “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet”.

All band members created stage names and the name Synster Gates came apparently from a drunken drive round a park in the company of "the Rev", drummer James Sullivan a founder member of the band who  died in 2009.

Avenged Sevenfold have released five albums in total, the most recent “Nightmare” released in 2010. They tour extensively throughout the USA , Europe and the UK and have a wide following throughout the world.

As well as his work with Avenged Sevenfold, Synster Gates was also involved in a side project Pinkly Smooth, an avant-garde metal band formed in 2001 also based in Huntington Beach. The band released one album “Unfortunate Snort” in 2002 and although there was talk of another album for a few years, the death of the Rev now makes this now even more unlikely.

Synster Gates has been awarded 2006 Total Guitar “Guitarist of the Year” and the Metal Hammer “Young Shredder “award in the same year. This followed the album “City of Evil” released in 2005 on major label Warner Brothers. This has been their most successful record to date and was awarded platinum status.

Teru

Teru joined Aikaryu (藍華柳) in 2002, replacing guitarist Death. In August 2003 they signed to Crow Music (the same label as Hizaki's band Crack Brain) and released their first single the following month. For the next three years they toured extensively, had numerous releases and several line-up changes. But in early 2006, they were involved in a car accident with most members having serious injuries. While the members recovered Teru participated in Hizaki's solo project, Hizaki Grace Project. In December Aikaryu regrouped and performed a small tour. But in April 2007, they decided to disband.
Teru joined Hizaki's solo band, Hizaki Grace Project, in October 2006. Which also included Yuu (Jakura) on bass, Mikage (Babylon) on drums and Juka (Moi dix Mois) on vocals. They released three albums; Dignity of Crest and Curse of Virgo, and on December 24, 2007 had their latest live performance.
In 2007, he was recruited for Versailles by Hizaki and Kamijo, after being recommended by the Rock May-Kan venue. They quickly developed a large following worldwide, having their debut EP released domestically in Europe, and to date have gone on two world tours, which took them across Asia, Europe and Latin America.
Teru is also an artist, having designed many releases for Kamijo's record label Sherow Artist Society under the alias "Wait a Minute" (stylized as wait A minute), including for Versailles, Hizaki Grace Project and Matenrou Opera. He even gave a lecture at a seminar on the development of Japanese pop culture, held by the Kyoto University of Art and Design on November 25, 2010.
In January 2011, he and the rest of Versailles started starring in their own TV mini drama called Onegai Kanaete Versailles (おねがいかなえてヴェルサイ, "Fulfill My Wish Versailles"). The show also starred Rina Koike and aired on Mainichi Broadcasting System and TV Kanagawa until March. Both Teru and Hizaki participated in the Blue Planet Japan project, which was created in response to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The project is comprised on many visual kei artists, including members of DaizyStripper, heidi., Matenrou Opera, and Dolly. They performed live at Shibuya O-West on June 25 and released the single "Hitotsu Dake ~We are the One~" on September 14, with the proceeds from the single donated to the victims.
On August 9, 2011, the second anniversary of Jasmine You's death, Teru composed and dedicated the song "「For You」" to his former bandmate.

Ken Kitamura

Ken Kitamura (北村 健, Kitamura Ken?), known professionally as ken, was born in Osaka, Japan on November 28, 1968. He is the guitarist of L'Arc~en~Ciel, a Japanese rock band. He is also the leader/guitarist/vocalist of his own band Sons Of All Pussys or S.O.A.P and solo album Speed.
Two months before his graduation, Ken stayed away from The Nagoya Institute of Technology (one of Japan's top schools in this field), where he was an architect major to join L'Arc~en~Ciel (ラルク アン シエル), or L'Arc or Laruku (ラルク), in 1992 at the request of his childhood friend Tetsuya Ogawa (aka Tetsu the bassist). It's rumored that as a result of this Ken's relationship with his parents turned sour. However during his MCs on some stops of L'Arc~en~Ciel's Theater of Kiss Tour he's mentioned/hinted at that he's now in the process of reconciling with them or if not has indeed now reconciled with them. He has written a breadth of L'Arc~en~ciel's music ever since his joining, including "As If In A Dream", "Vivid Colors", "Niji", "The Fourth Avenue Café, "Shout At The Devil", "Kasou", "Lies and Truth", "Lover Boy", and "Twinkle Twinkle".
In 2002 Ken's own band, S.O.A.P, became active as a result of a break in L'Arc~en~Ciel's activities, with ex-L'Arc~en~Ciel member Yasunori Sakurazawa (Sakura) as the drummer, and Ein as the bassist (a half Japanese/German model who appears in a few L'Arc PVs). Each member contributed songs based on themes; Ken with love, Ein with Desire, and Sakura with his experiences in jail, and together they shelled out four albums; Grace, Gimme A Guitar, High! and Paradise. All S.O.A.P. activities have ceased since 2004.
On August 23, 2006, Ken released a solo album titled "Speed", referring to himself as just Ken and has taken a new, "clean" appearance similar to his early days with L'Arc~en~Ciel.
Guitars
Ken is currently an endorser for Fernandes Guitars and is usually seen playing these guitars live with L'Arc~en~Ciel. However he tends to mod his models instead of using them stock. For instance, in the past he used to use Van Zandt pick-ups heavily in his own personal guitars and has since moved on to Kinman pick-ups (this change having now been reflected in one of his more recent FERNANDES musician models). However he has also used many different guitars in and out of L'Arc~en~Ciel, including Gibson, Fender, and Steinberger models.

Saul Hudson (born July 23, 1965), better known by his stage name Slash, is a British American musician and songwriter. He is the former lead guitarist of the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, with whom he performed and recorded from 1985 to 1996. He later formed Slash's Snakepit and co-founded Velvet Revolver with his former bandmates Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, and his debut solo album, Slash, was released in April 2010. He has been on tour with touring vocalist Myles Kennedy to promote the album since its release. A second solo album is due in 2012.

Slash has received critical recognition as a guitarist. In August 2009, Time Magazine ranked him #2 on its list of the "10 Best Electric Guitar Players of All-Time". He was also ranked #21 on Gigwise's list of the "50 Greatest Guitarists Ever".

According to Slash, he was born in West Hampstead in West London, and raised in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. His African-American and Nigerian mother, Ola Hudson, was born in Tennessee, and worked as a costume designer for David Bowie, among many other actors and musicians. His English father, Anthony Hudson, was an artist who created album covers for musicians such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.

When Saul was eleven, his parents moved the family to Los Angeles, California. His parents separated and he lived primarily with his mother. He was given the nickname "Slash" by family friend Seymour Cassel because he was "always in a hurry, zipping around from one thing to another".

As a young boy, Slash was influenced by a musical school teacher:

'Tangerine' from Led Zeppelin III was the very first song I mastered. I had a teacher at school who had a Les Paul and he was always playing Cream and Zeppelin licks and whatever. And when I heard him do that I said "That's what I want to do".

After deciding to form a band with friend Steven Adler, Slash decided to pick up the bass guitar as Adler had declared himself lead guitarist. Slash stopped in at Fairfax Music School and told the receptionist he wanted to play the bass, and at that time met his teacher Robert Wolin. Wolin told him that in order to learn he would need a bass of his own. Slash went home and asked his grandmother and was given a worn-out, single stringed flamenco guitar. After hearing Wolin play "Brown Sugar" by ear, Slash realized that the guitar was his calling. He subsequently dropped out of high school to focus on music. In a Rolling Stone magazine article, he remarked:

My big awakening happened when I was fourteen. I'd been trying to get into this older girl's pants for a while, and she finally let me come over to her house. We hung out, smoked some pot and listened to Aerosmith's Rocks. It hit me like a fucking ton of bricks. I sat there listening to it over and over, and totally blew off this girl. I remember riding my bike back to my grandma's house knowing that my life had changed. Now I identified with something.
